UNISON has welcomed the decision by the government to temporarily scrap VAT on the sale of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 crisis.
The UK’s social care system is largely reliant on private providers and PPE, including masks and gloves, was previously subject to 20% VAT, which could not always be reclaimed by care providers.
The Treasury estimates that the cut will save more than £100 million for those buying PPE.
UNISON national officer Andrew Dobbie welcomed the move, noting that the union had called for it two weeks ago: “The government now needs to redouble efforts to make sure carers can actually get hold of PPE, as members and employers across the country are telling us it is still very hard to secure supplies.”
