Our union’s position on a no-deal Brexit has been consistent from the outset. It’s an existential threat to our nation’s public services, our economy and our communities. At a time when public services are stretched to breaking point, jumping off the no-deal cliff edge would be an act of vandalism which would wreck lives and cost them too.
So it was great to hear Labour’s shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer speaking so clearly and passionately against the risk of no-deal at the TUC this morning. I’ve worked closely with Keir over the past two years, and know how hard he’s working to try and stop the Tories from taking us out without a deal and without the consent of Parliament.
It was fitting that Keir’s address to Congress coincided with the decision by Scotland’s highest civil court, the court of session, that Boris Johnson’s dodgy proroguing of Parliament is unlawful. This Prime Minister and his establishment clique don’t think the law applies to them, as they preside over attacks on our rights as working people.
We need Parliament to be recalled to stop no-deal Brexit once and for all – but as long as this unlawful closure continues, we have to keep up the pressure on the Tories. They’re playing every trick in the book and even plan to break the law if it means getting the result they want. We cannot let them succeed.
