A few weeks ago, I visited the domestics at Princess Alexandra Hospital, who have been waging a relentless and passionate campaign against plans to privatise their jobs. A few weeks ago, they voted overwhelmingly to take strike action – 99% voting in favour on an 84% turnout. This is a hospital where practically every domestic is a UNISON member, because they know that together we are all stronger.
Tomorrow they were set to take the first of six days of industrial action to fight for their jobs, pay and conditions. Yet today, the NHS Trust have abandoned their plans and pledged to keep the workers in house.
This is a stunning victory for these incredible workers – a testament to their collective strength. They have shown their employer, their community and everyone who has heard their story just how integral they are to our NHS.
This victory is also a message to other hospitals who are considering privatising services – NHS staff are determined to stay part of the health service, and if you take our members on, you will lose.
On behalf of everyone in our union – I want to congratulate the PAH domestics for their courage in the face of real pressure. I am so proud they have stood strong and I am so proud that they are part of our union.
